Process Improvement
Publishing was established in 1984 when Stephen Page, a policies and
procedures manager at a large aerospace company, wrote his first book, Handbook of Business Policies and Procedures (published by
Prentice-Hall, Inc., now Simon and Shuster). Frustrated with the
lack of good books on the subject, Page took it upon himself to write a
book that could be used by any policies and procedures writer regardless
if he or she is a novice or an experienced writer. This book is based on his
extensive experience (and lessons learned) from working at large and small companies.
Page wanted to help fellow writers quickly set
up a framework of policies and procedures and to use a standard writing
format that would assure that the published policies and procedures were consistent, reliable, trustworthy, and easy to read.
In 1994, Page
completely updated and rewrote the first book and renamed it, Establishing a System of Policies and Procedures. He designed his
own web site and self-published the book; he now sells to online and storefront bookstores, associations, conferences, and workshops.
Over the next 10 years, Page wrote three more books, each with its own
policy and procedure theme. His four books are considered timeless as Page's methods and
processes never go out of date...only the methods to publish policies and procedures might
change, e.g., PDF policies and procedures on the Intranet or Internet or on DVDs, CDs, or other media, or as PRINTED policies and procedures. Page's books will
remain in your reference library from job to job and he is certain that you'll learn something
new each time you read them.
The five current books are:
- Establishing a
System of Policies and Procedures - Primer, easy
reading to help you learn the basics of writing policies and procedures
and for setting up a system of policies and procedures in
a relatively short time. A seven-section writing format is introduced in this book. This Microsoft Word (with styles) template is free with any PDF purchase.
- 7 Steps to Better
Written Policies and Procedures - This entire book is based
on the importance of using a writing format template for all policies and procedures. The writing format is used to place
policy and procedure content into a logical sequence for easy
reading and easy application by the targeted audiences. Every policies and procedures system must have a writing format; because without it, the policies and procedures would be difficult to read and would likely be put aside or lost on a hard drive.
- Best Practices in
Policies and Procedures - Collection of chapters on the
best practices of writing policies and procedures (e.g., writing practices and principles, developing flowcharts and workflows, using team building techniques such as brainstorming or nominal group theory, and others).
- Achieving 100%
Compliance of Policies and Procedures - Comprehensive
book for making improvements in all of your policies and procedures, from
the first time the topic is researched, and to all subsequent revisions.
In addition to a 40 Step Action Plan for creating a policy and procedure program, find complete details on writing policies and procedures that can be easily measured and subsequently improved. Also, find extensive chapters on communications, training,
compliance, continuous improvement, and auditing.
- Writing Exceptional Policies and Procedures - This book integrates the best sections of each of the above four books. This books lays out the sequence required by all policy and procedure writers and managers to make the right decisions to set up a ROBUST policies and procedures program with high-quality, well-written, policy and procedure documents. "Stephen's books do what no other book on the market does today: Offer solid policies and procedures advice using real-life as the source."
